Frequently asked questions about the A2 milk test
Everything about the MilkTest® rapid test: how it works, accuracy, the difference between A1 and A2, PureMilk and on-farm use.
What is the A2 milk rapid test (MilkTest®)?
MilkTest®, by Dairy Tech (a Scienco Biotech brand), is a rapid test that identifies whether an animal is A2A2 — that is, whether it produces A2 milk, free of the A1 beta-casein protein. The farmer collects a few drops of milk, applies them to the device and reads the result in 20 minutes, right on the farm, with no lab and no blood sampling.
What is the difference between A1 and A2 beta-casein?
Beta-casein is one of the main proteins in milk and comes in two variants: A1 and A2. A2 milk contains only the A2 variant. The difference between them is genetic: it depends on which version of the gene the animal carries. A2A2 cows produce only A2 milk.
How does the test work in practice?
You collect a few drops of milk from the animal in a clean, dry vial, apply the sample to the MilkTest® device (similar in format to a pregnancy test) and wait 20 minutes. Two lines — control and test — indicate A2 milk. A single line indicates it is not A2. No equipment or licensed professional is required.
Is the test accurate? What is its accuracy?
Yes. MilkTest® was validated against genotyping, the gold-standard method, showing 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity for identifying A2A2 animals. It is a reliable screening test for use in the field.
What are the benefits of identifying A2 milk?
Knowing which animals in the herd are A2A2 lets the farmer separate A2 milk production, add value to the product on the market and select A2A2 animals for breeding or sale. It is a way to differentiate the herd without relying on expensive, slow laboratory tests.
Where can I buy MilkTest®?
On this page you can build your order with the quantity you want and complete the purchase through the Dairy Tech sales WhatsApp (+55 49 99973-4733), where our team confirms shipping and payment method.
What are the limitations of the test?
MilkTest® is a screening test, intended to quickly identify A2A2 animals in the field. For A2 milk purity control in a tank or pooled milk, the PureMilk line detects A1 beta-casein contamination above 5%, with 95% sensitivity.
Can conventional milk be turned into A2 milk?
No. A2 milk production depends on the animal's genetics: only A2A2 cows produce A2 milk. No process converts conventional milk into A2 milk — what MilkTest® does is identify which animals already produce A2 milk naturally.
Does the test need to be refrigerated?
No. MilkTest® is stored at room temperature, with no need for refrigeration, which makes it easier to transport and use on the farm.
Does the test work on UHT and pasteurized milk?
Yes. MilkTest® works on raw milk as well as UHT and pasteurized milk.
What is the difference between MilkTest® A2 Milk and PureMilk?
MilkTest® A2 Milk identifies whether an animal is A2A2, using the milk of a single animal — ideal for screening the herd. PureMilk checks the purity of A2 milk in a tank or pooled milk, detecting A1 beta-casein contamination — ideal for dairy processors and cooperatives that need to ensure the purity of the milk they bottle.
What is the sensitivity of PureMilk?
PureMilk has 95% sensitivity and detects A1 beta-casein (A1 milk) contamination above 5% in an A2 milk sample. It is the quality control tool for ensuring the purity of bulk tank A2 milk.
How many tests do I need for my herd?
Each MilkTest® A2 Milk test analyzes the milk of one animal. To screen your herd, you need one test per cow you want to check. Tests are sold in packs of 1, 3, 10, 15, 30, 50 and 100 units — the larger the quantity, the better the terms. If you are unsure about the right volume, talk to our sales team.
What do I do after identifying the A2A2 cows?
Once the A2A2 animals are identified, you can separate production to sell A2 milk as a differentiated product, select A2A2 animals for breeding and build an A2 herd, or add value when selling these animals. The Dairy Tech team can advise you on the next steps via WhatsApp.
